Named Instance SQL2008R2

  • I am trying to install SQL2008R2 enterprize version on server 2. Can I use the existing Instance name ( suppose INST01 is already exist in Server1) Because when I am trying to use the same instance during installation I am getting this error 'access denied' when the user has the local admin access.

  • Are you trying to upgrade the existing instance or create a new instance?

  • Creating new instance on new server.

  • Then you need to use an instance name that does not exist on that server.

  • Shouldn't it be ok if the instances are on different servers?

    I'm sure it's a different problem (I might be wrong:-P).

  • That's what I thought. Thanks

  • Be sure to run the setup program as an admin, got burned on that before.. My user has admin but it seemed to have problems so when I ran the setup as an admin I didn't have the same problems..

    YMMV
