Permissions to connect to Reporting Services via Management Studio

  • Hi,

    Can anyone tell me what permissions I need to assign to a user to allow them to log into Reporting Services via management studio ? They need to be able to change reporting services server settings and manage jobs.

    In tests the only way I've been able to do this so far is by assigning local admin rights (tried a number of ways) - surely there must be a more restrictive way of doing this ?

    Any help much appreciated!

  • It looks like the user needs to be assigned to the System Administrator role, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159797.aspx.

  • Thanks for your response!

    Granting these permissions was one of the 1st things I tried - tried again to double check and it still didn't work.

    I've made some progress since my original post.. if I add my account to the 'Distributed COM Users' local group lets me connect via SSMS. Here's the link where I read this;

    http://tickett.wordpress.com/2011/11/24/configuring-sql-server-reporting-services-2008-r2-permissions/

    The question now is, why do we have to add users to this group and is there another way round it ? We've got other SSRS installations which we can connect to via SSMS without adding users to this group. Anyone know why ? I've checked group policies etc. Maybe something to do with the way SSRS has been installed ?

    Cheers
