Database College degree... which one is better?

  • I am a growing DBA fanatic, and i am looking to get very involved with databases in the future. I am transferring to a university in the upcoming months, and looking for advice for degrees.

I am look at a couple choices either a Computer Information System(CIS) degree.I already have my associates in this major, and in universities it seems to be more business oriented. And then there is a Computer Science(CS) degree. Im not sure if either one is geared more toward databases or not.

I am hoping to get some opinions from all ranges of DBA, professional, growing, and barely starting.

    Thanks!

  • My experience with both courses is that they are limited in how much database work is involved. The CS degree is generally more development oriented and the CIS is business oriented but more technical and provides a broader range of exposure.

Both have their merits. I prefer something far more technical than what you can get in the CIS types of programs though with a bit less involvement with the varied development languages from the CS side.

  • My favorite DBAs either have no degree at all or have a degree in mathematics.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
