Hi,
Our organisation has some strict firewall infrastructure in place that prevents us from accessing MS SQL databases from our desktops. In the Oracle world, we have to access those databases via a TNS Proxy set-up. However, our IT guys don't know how to facilitate the same access for SQL Server DBs.
I apologise that I don't understand enough about the firewall technology to provide details on it, but I was hoping someone might be familiar enough with these sorts of situations that they might be able to provide advice on how we can configure things to ensure we can access these databases from our desktops?
I'm not sure if it's relevant, but our Windows servers containing the SQL Server databases are on virtualised Linux environments.
Is anyone aware of TNS Proxy equivalent for SQL Server?
Any help appreciated.

Why don't they just allow the TCP-IP ports that SQL is configured to use through their firewalls (even restricted down to specific source IP addresses) ? Do they insist on some sort of proxy?

Hi Mister Magoo,

No, I don't believe they are allowing that sort of access - they're quite strict about it. And this is the first time they've been asked to allow access from a desktop to any SQL Server DB that supports a major transaction system.

Seeing we are mainly an Oracle shop, we don't have many SQL Server DBs and therefore they didn't plan for providing this sort of access.

Any ideas?
