PF Usage of RAM reaches near to the maximum memory of the Server frequently

  • Hi All,

i have a server which has 8 GB of RAM , 3 GHz, which has SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition (64-bit) installed. For every few days the PF Usage of the Server when we check in the task manager it would have reached 6 or 7 GB, i have allocated 2 GB for minimum server memory and maximum server memory as 4 GB in SQL SErver Proerties, Memory tab.

Kindly advice how and what could be done

  • Is it just a database server running only SQL Server? PF = Pagefile? Why do you set a maximum? How big are your databases?

  • All looks fine. If you're only using 6 or 7GB then you're not experiencing memory pressure?

SQL does use some memory outside & above the 4GB limit you set, other usage will be down to OS, any other applications.

  • I have SQL Server (only) and the server configuration is win 2003 64 bit, 3.90 GHz Intel Xeon @ 2.66 GHz 15 GB RAM.

I have set my Memory settings in the SQL Server as Minimum memory to 2 GB and Max Memory to 12 GB. but frequently the PF Usage if i see in the Task Maanger it would have reached 80 to 90% in short time (days). why is that is there any memory settings in SQL server need to be relooked or any other setting to be relooked. please suggest.

  • I think you might be misunderstanding what those numbers mean. Please read this entire article including how to monitor the existing and calculate an optimal page file size on Server 2003:

Explanation of Pagefile Usage as reported in the Task Manager

Can you please explain your reasoning a bit as to why you think a virus huard might help explain Page File usage?
