Big Data

  • I am hearing this term "big term" very loud these days. Everybody is talking about it. Does any one know what is this fuss all about. How is different from tradition RDBMS, (SQL Server). I have read a few articles about it but wanted to start this question from basic.

    Thanks

  • Big data is quite diverse nowadays, somewhat like the cloud.

More like specific problems that might benefit from a non-standard RDBMS approach. Like social media/search robots having scaleout methods where one node may lag behind the other in return for an instantious response at the cost of ACID. If one nodes fails another may have outdated information but still available; or have a very quick response on a specific search query.

  • This is probably the best definition that I have read:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_data

In general though, "Big Data" is more commonly used as a marketing BS term, as in "We support Big Data".

  • thanks. one more thing, how you look the future of Big Data? should i jump into Big Data or should i continue working in SQL server. I am little confused at this stage of career ( just 4 years of SQL dev-DBA experience )

    Please suggest.
