Combining values into a category in SSRS pie chart

  • Hello everyone. I'm new to SSRS and need a bit of a hint to get the ball rolling. I selected one of the preset exploded pies and it's laid out with the 6 categories.

I'm pulling data using FetchXML. In the raw data, an option set field called lead source contains 60 possible options. The thing is, I can divide the options into 6 broad categories (which is ideal as we'd rather show a pie cut in 6 instead of 60).

I'm sort of stuck on where to start. I set up the main dataset, but I don't know if I should create a new dataset for each category? What should I aggregate it as in the query to get it to show up as a percentage on the pie? Does this stuff go under Values, Category Groups, or Series Groups? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Bump!

  • I'm a little confused by what your trying to explain but thats cuz I have ADD or something.

The SSRS charts work very much the same as excel pie charts, one thing to try would be to paste a sample dataset in excel and throw a chart on that dataset.

you explain you have 60 different items that go into 6 categories.

The 60 Items would be Groups, and the 6 categories would be the Series.

But as you explain you do not want to show the 60 Different Items.

So you need to add the Category to your Dataset, and then that new Category would be in the Category Group, and the aggregate would be in the values.
