Creating Real time DASHBOARDS

  • Hi to all.

I work for a company that uses from 2005 , SSAS of MICROSOFT.

Now we are using SSAS 2008 R2 and as soon as possibile, we will migrate in SSAS 2012.

For this we are also studying new features (Especially TABULAR MODEL and DAX).

We built 10 very good cubes that helps to give data to our users.

Users use a lot of excel and little reports, that are reading OLAP CUBES.

It all works fine,,,but Now we want more.

We want to build very good DASHBOARDS, based on OLAP CUBES.

Is there any good product that can create any kind of ANALYSIS AND DASHBOARD , based on OLAP CUBES we built in these years ???

At the moment we are happy of MICROSOFT SSAS , we do not want to change with other different product like QLIKVIEW - COGNOS- BOARD - BUSINESS OBJECT...and so on

We shoukd like a product that has an own console , and in this console we can build an analysis of data and dashboard and drillthrough , and charts all in a solution...reading existing our OLAP CUBES

Our company is in EUROPE (Italy...) ...

We found a product called TARGIT similar to what we desire...

Can anyone knows other and can advice us ????

We did some experiments with Power Pivot DASHBOARD or REPORTING SERVICES, but we ' d like to have something more powerful and intuive product for final smart users,

(even if something i did with POWERPIVOT)...

    Regards in advance.

    I

  • PerformancePoint is a pretty good dashboarding tool, but I believe requires Sharepoint. If you are going to be using 2012 you might also want to look into PowerView. It is considered a data visualization tool, not sure if it is what you want but it might be worth a look.

  • Ciao.

    Many thanks for yoru reply.

Yes Performance Point seems a good solution,

Yes it needs of SHAREPOINT 2010 or next year SHAREPOINT 2013.

It should a good solution, especially for who has OLAP CUBES MICROSOFT solutions yet.

it depends how much does it costs...:-)... I think too much....

I saw also DUNDAS DATA VISUALITATION , it seems very powerful.

But we are in Italy, and if i need support , it is very difficult to have...

    Do you know it ????

I saw also TARGIT , a Danish product, and i discover it is sold also with an italian company,,,

I did good experince with PowerPivot in Excel but the problem is that is a self bi solution.

If you ned to share , you need the same of a non standard version of SHAREPOINT....

I hope someone else , did other good experience and i hope they will write to me.

Many thanks agains have a good day.

Now i go to bed. 😀

    Ciao.

  • I forgot to tell you that , i will inform better about POWERVIEW.

I saw a demo in Milano in march 2012, but it seems a very young product.

And the same it requieres MICROSOFT SHAREPOINT.

    Ciao again.

  • Forget all that. Do it in-house like I did! 🙂

  • ... or failing the in-house resource, assuming you have some capital, then Dundas is very powerful

  • I heard Datamicron's Performa is a good tool for such things. It doesn't depend on SharePoint, it is standalone application, and connects to SSAS cubes and PPivot as well. No coding is required. everything is done with drag and drop, they have BI Reports, which is simple drag-and-drop based on cube. For dashbaording they have dashboard designer which is very easy to use, again no coding required, dashbaords can be seen in browsers. It can integrate SSRS pages in itself, and you have good control over drillthrough etc...

  • Hi.

Thanks you very much for your comment.

I added the page of this product in my favorites and as soon as possibile , i will read about it.

You understood very well what i need, a product that helps us to create adn share without SHAREPOINT , reports and especially Dashboards.

Only problem could be learning it with a brief course or specialist...

Will see..i think i will install a DEMO on my PC and i will study a little..:-)

    Regards.

PS. It depends how much is it 🙂 ...

    Have a good day.

  • Make sure to check out Power View a little better. It's very intuitive and with a few clicks you can make a compelling dashboard.

If you have Excel 2013, PowerPivot and Power View run natively inside your Excel sheet, so you don't need SharePoint anymore!

  • Hi.

    Thans for your comment.

Yes i am reading about PowerView and i used Power pIVOT yet.

I will install Excel 2013 so i will test both together...

But even if i was able to create dashboards in PowerView , how can i share these Excel workbooks with others users ???

I do not know want to build only dashboard for me...but i have to produce something that a group of users have to use in our network...

How can i do that without SharePoint ???

Remember that you need a specific edition of Office 2013 to have Power View. I think it is Professional Plus, which only comes in volume licensing.

Share? Everyone with the same edition of Excel can view the Power View reports. I believe you can export it to PowerPoint, but I'll have to check that out.

Without SharePoint it certainly becomes trickier. Microsoft has designed it's BI stack in such a way you need SharePoint in a corporate environment so you can easily share your dashboards.

Anyway, other competitors also need some kind of server to run their dashboards on, so either way, you'll still be spending money.

  • Thanks for reply.

Yes MICROSOFT wants you buy Sharepoint 201 OR BETTER 2013 ,,,but not all companies can do that.

Besides you need SHAREPOINT not STANDARD EDITION but ENTERPRISE...

    Another question if you know..

    I have SSAS 2008 R2 and i built 10 MULTIDIMENSIONAL CUBES.

To browse them with POWERVIEW i need to upgrade to SQL SERVER 2012 ..but i read it is no native so i need to install SQL SERVER 2012 and add to it also a new CTP ...

    Is it true ???

After all can i really browse my MULTIDIMENSIONAL CUBES without do nothing on clients and ONLY to install that patch in my DW Server over SQL SERVER 2012 standard installation ???

(aT THE MOMENT i cannot use TABULAR Models only POWERPIVOT with Excel)..

Thanks for your possibile reply,,,,HAVE A GOOD WEEK.END:-)

  • Yes, you need SQL Server 2012 to use Power View. In order to use it on Office 2013, I think you need service pack 1, not 100% sure on that.

Furthermore, Power View works - for the moment - only on tabular models. This means PowerPivot or SSAS 2012 Tabular. So you cannot use your multidimensional cubes in Power View.

ps: I think there's something wrong with your caps lock

  • Hi thanks for you reply.

    This confim what i read.

Besides i found this useful link that tells there is CTP for Multidimensional Cubes in PowerView.

Here is that link ----> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35822

If i understood good i have to :

    1) Install SQL SERVER 2012 on my SSAS Server (New one virtual server)

(Our company will buy only SQL SERVER 2012 Standard Edition..so nothing Tabular Model are permitted,,,)

    2) Install that CTP (I understood so..)

    3) In this way i will be able to use PowerView with PowerPivot and also with Multidimensional Cubes.

In future if our company will buy a version major of Standard , also it will be possibile use Tabular Models...

Did you suggest to try ????

Will see next month will be install Sql Server 2012....

Ps. Awfully sorry for my Caps Lock...:-)

  • Right, I forgot about that CTP. It is still brand new, so I would test it out thoroughly before you set anything in production.
