Problems with install / configure SSRS 2012 in SharePoint mode with SharePoint 2010

  • We are trying to install and configure SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) 2012 in SharePoint mode with SharePoint (SP) 2010 on a separate SP app VM. We followed the Microsoft install check lists:

which mostly went well but had a few minor issues. Once we got past some issues with the SSRS 2012 add-in for SP on all SP app and web VMs in the SP farm, we ran into issues getting the SSRS instance recognized by the SP farm using the requested SP Central Administration commands or the SP PowerShell admin commands.

I understand that SSRS 2012 instances work differently in SharePoint mode than prior SSRS instances – run and managed as SharePoint services (especially important for scale-out load balance scenarios). In prior SSRS versions, an SSRS SharePoint mode install would install SSRS OS service(s) on the selected system (visible in the services management tool – under Administrative Tools), and then use the SSRS service(s) in the context of the SP farm.

After our recent successful SSRS 2012 install (no errors for the main SSRS component – only errors for the SSRS add-ins that were later resolved), there were no SSRS OS services installed on the selected SSRS 2012 install system. Since I have not yet experienced a successful SSRS 2012 SharePoint mode install, I don’t know if this lack of SSRS 2012 OS service(s) is normal / expected or is a possible source of the current issues.

I wonder if the SSRS 2012 install check list from Microsoft mentioned above may be incomplete – possibly missing some tasks.

    Some questions:

    - Has anyone successfully installed SSRS 2012 in SharePoint mode with SharePoint 2010?

    - Are there any additional steps / tasks that must be done beyond what is mentioned in the Microsoft SSRS 2012 check lists (mentioned above or other lists)?

    - Should a SSRS 2012 instance in SharePoint mode with SharePoint 2010 install SSRS 2012 OS services (as was done by SSRS 2008 R2 and earlier versions)?

Thanks in advance for any insights and help you can provide.

    Scott R.
