  • The pound is only $1.57 conversion rate. That means the upper end is only $63,000 per year?

Is that correct? Are BI developers really paid that low in the UK?

Our NHS has received massive IT funding over the last few years. Most newsworthy is the failed Labour intregation project which wasted 12 billion (that's thousand million) pounds of taxpayer's money. A large project like this didn't go unnoticed - jobs were posted everywhere. The rates advertised for programmers were however mostly woefully inadequate. So where did all the money go? Infrastructure? Some details but no answers here.

    Edit - typo.

  • Thanks.

We are public sector so obviously the pay is less than private sector. It is secure job in the current market of recession.

How much would you get paid in the USA for BI Developer with 3-4 years of experience?

it will be interesting to know the different salary of USA & UK.

    Thanks,

    Vijay

  • Bear in mind that we usually have shorter hours and longer holidays here in the UK than in the US, especially in public sector jobs. Comparing the salary only doesn't tell the whole story.

It really depends on location and type of organisation.

In general NHS pays lower but there are other benefits in working for the public sector.

Also you may get paid more if you are working in London.

  • Thats true. NHS employee gets more holiday and better environment to work.

You get paid more in london but it will be more only because of living expense in london.

BI developers are typically SQL developers that expanded their skils into BI. At least that is how I am doing it.

The other two BI developers I know also came from a SQL developer background.

So I would think a BI developer would get about the same or more than a SQL developer.

I think most experienced SQL developers are in the $80,000+ range in the USA.

$63,000 per year is entry level (or very little experience 1-2 years) money for a SQL Server developer.

Most BI developers have serious SQL experience before they start on BI.

Or is my observation way off from the normal?

If someone told me they have 3-4 years of BI experience, I would expect they also have 5-7 years of SQL development experience.

  • I'm definitely higher end than avg but I don't even look at a job under 100K.

Just curious, do you live/work in a Major city in the US?

I understand if you don't feel comfortable answering

  • No I'm in Canada.

I live in a small city and consult in a big one so I get lower living costs (actually more for the same money) with higher consulting fees.

I currently only charge 55$/H but it's for garanteed 40 H / weeks with 1 month warning before contract end. I also have a lot of other perks that consultant don't normally have. The biggest one being no traffic, no support and 100% flexibility in hours worked.

  • I think that a person with the knowledge of BI should be paid more than the average salary. It takes years of hard work and experience to become a BI professional. BI knowledge is one of the most valuable. Many core business decisions are made with the help of BI. They are an important asset of any organization.
