  • I think you people in the United States have forgotten the meaning of Memorial Day. All you can think about is your long weekend and time off.

    Why the nasty comment?

It's a time to remember those who gave their lives to make the U.S. and much of the world free for you to express your nasty comment.

Based on what I saw yesterday with my own eyes, I can't agree with that statement. Flags decorate the graves of our servicemen. People attended the memorial service in the park nearby. Parades and concerts were given in honor of the fallen and for those still serving.

Doesn't seem like the meaning has been forgotten to me.

  • It's not a nasty comment at all. I just don't understand the point of wishing people a Happy Memorial Day. What is so happy about it? Brave young people have given their lives in war and their families are mourning their loss. What's so happy about that?

Not much, but I think the spirit is to give thanks and love to those people who sacrificied themselves for the good of the people (I'm canadian so I can't say for sure).

There is both sadness and happiness. Sadness for the loss of life and for their friends and families. The happiness comes with the realization that some have given their lives to serve others; that I am free to do pretty much what I want because some cared enough for their nation that they put their lives on the line. Memorial Day is about remembering those who have died while serving in the military. It doesn't necessarily mean they died in war.

    Wow. Way to troll.

  • Well, I live in a country (Israel) where Memorial Day pretty much takes over everyone's life (no entertainment and the media is devoted entirely to fallen soldiers' and their families' stories). No one would ever dream of wishing someone a "Happy Memorial Day". So I guess we just have a different way of looking at this particular day.

If your original comment had stated that you didn't understand the phrase and explained why, I seriously doubt anyone would have taken offense.

I'm a combat vet. I also have dead to mourn on Memorial Day. And yes, there's an inherent contradiction in saying "Happy" associated with "Memorial Day". We also have a lot of parades on Memorial Day - to honor those who have died. That doesn't mean that we don't enjoy going to the parades, or have this strange mix of grief at loss and gratitude for time spent with family and friends going on at the same time.

  • If anyone had taken offense with my original choice of words, then I apologize. And I hope everyone had a peaceful day of remembrance.
