SQL 2008 Analysis services on Virtual Machine

  • Is it a good idea to instal SQL 2008 Analysis services on Virtual Machine?

    Does Microsoft recommends it ?

  • I have run quite a few on VMS, as long as they have the resources then i don't see a problem.. not sure what MS recomends though

  • It's just like running SQL Server on a virtual. Do you have enough resources? If so, yeah, it's fine. If not, no it's not. Actually, same thing as a physical box when it comes down to it. Does it have enough resurces? Then you're good to go.

  • It is going to be for finacial system reporting and with 4CPU ,8GB RAM and 100GB disk.My company's turnover is huge I am suspecting this Virtual Machine concept will not suit this

  • That could work, but what other processes will be on the server? How much data do you have? I'm asking because i assume you're going virtual because you're going to run other servers on that same hardware.

  • yes, 2 TB in 6 months time

  • It's going to be difficult to put 2tb into 100gb, virtual or not.

  • thanks for your help!

  • How can I justify my answer for installing Anlysis Services and Integration Services on Virtual Machine for Production Server?

The scenario is I don't have any details of Cube growth and how the data is fed into the cubes but management is asking for justifiaction why VM is not a good choice for Analysis services and Integration Services?

  • I don't understand. You said that you had to put 2tb into 100gb. That's a problem.

But that has nothing to do with virtual or not virtual. Can you install & run Analysis Services on a virtual machine? Yes, you can. The question is not whether or not it will run. The question is will it have sufficient resources when it runs. The machine you described could run SSAS as a virtual or on the hard iron itself. The question is, what else will be running with it?

The problem is not related to having a VM, you will need to plan for resources regadless of using a VM or a physial machine. If you are plannig on growing to a 2tb DW you will need a disk capable of holding that data.

  • Thanks a lot everyone!
