User Defined Roles

  • Looking for a short article that explains what a user-defined security role is in a database, how to create one and assign rights to it and then users.

Can cover schemas if you would like.

  • I'd like to take a stab at this one; i've got a lot of examples I post to the forums on the subject.

  • Excellent. Don't get too technical, don't use too much T-SQL/BOL style of explanation. Think junior DBA, secretary trained to handle basics, and explain in a simple way what to do and what makes sense.

  • Lowell,

If you want to "continue the tradition" on these short articles, please feel free to use the "SQL Spackle" idea and the quote from "Phil McCraken". I've found it really helps set expectations that these short articles that Steve has been requesting are mostly "single topic" and not meant to be complete solutions by themselves.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
