  • A great article on how one can use data mining for something else than the traditional data mining purposes:

  • Databases are scary. Just imagine how much Google knows about you and your interests. And they admit themselves that they are logging everyghing, every keyword you typed in and every site you went to. If FBI gets that info from them, they'll now what color are your slippers, not just what books you had read.

  • If you go to your Google account, you can get an idea of what they know. Here's the "web history" link.

Databases aren't scary (well, maybe Oracle is), it's the people that (mis)use them that are scary.

It's a fact of everyday life now that so many little things of our lives are digitally recorded. Every time you call, each shopping item if you are using self-scanning, everything you look up on the net et cetera. Privacy these days is becoming more and more an illusion.

If you're interested in such things, you can enlist yourself on the Bruce Schneier mailing list (one of the security guru's). A real good read.

(But hey, on the other hand, 50 years ago, everybody know everybody in these small towns just by plain old gossip. Decide what you like best ;-))
