  • "I’m more than a little tubby"  You hide it well. 🙂

But I would like say: If you want to lose weight, 1st eat less, 2nd exercise.

  • I was shocked on a company away day into the local hills by how unfit a lot of colleagues half my age were.  I was worried that I wouldn't be able to keep up but it was they who seriously struggled.

I don't go to the gym or set aside formal exercise time due to time pressures of life but what I do is

    • Walk at a brisk pace between the station to work rather than catch the tram or bus
    • Take the stairs rather than the lift (I work on the 17th floor of an office block so this one is a bit extreme)
    • Get my lunch from a shop 1/2 a mile away from where I work (up and down those stairs again)
    • Whenever I get up from a seating position I don't use my arms.  It's all legs and posture.  Thanks to the Physio who taught me that one!

You'd be amazed what affect climbing stairs can have on your fitness.  The other benefit is that it strengthens your lower back muscles.  I have to focus on core strength as I have a damaged spine and this helps me retain mobility.

Exercise can also help lift the mode for those suffering with depression

My late father-in-law said that being physically fit won't make you live longer but you will be in a better place to enjoy what life you have.

  • Couldn't agree more, my basic principle is do something (fairly serious, I don't count a brisk walk) every work day. I love to play squash, racket ball, tennis, badminton or 5 a side. Sadly I can't cycle commute right now but hope to soon. Gym at least once, hopefully twice, every week. I'm always knackered but at least somewhat happier than I would be otherwise.

  • One other benefit I have noticed about taking time away from the job and exercising is that some of my better ideas and solutions come to me while I am exercising. I tend to let my mind wonder when I am exercising and I always come back to thinking about work. And sometimes, out of the blue, comes the most elegant solution to the most difficult problem I am facing.

  • I can recommend a standing desk.

  • Great advice, Grant. I'm much like you. I exercise (at home - gym membership at the moment isn't possible) 3 times a week. I am allowed only 2, 15-minute breaks per day - once in the morning and once in the afternoon. I set a timer using Windows 10 Alarm & Clock app, to stop once an hour. I'll get away from my PC and walk outside for a minute, using the stairs going down and up (I work on the third floor). I walk during my lunch, so have to eat at my PC (I'm an hourly employee, so watching the clock is paramount). I average over 10K steps per day with this regiment. Yeah, I'm still overweight, but I know I would be a lot worse, if I didn't do this.

Concerning helping with stress is why I do this, as well as trying to be as healthy as I can be. And let's be honest, as much as you can manage stress there are certain stressful situations/environments/what-have-you we all deal with which we cannot control or remove. So, I do my regiment to help me deal with it, at least better than not doing my physical regiment.

  • Heh... I can keep up with most folks... it's why I bought a 4 wheel drive truck with a V-8 and cup holders. 😀
