one word "bitlocker", we've had laptops stolen - lesson learned!!! - even our company approved USB sticks have encryption now
but i still don't quite get Encryption at rest for sql

Thanks for that posting - it was a good reminder that we have to be more cautious and less trusting when traveling. I'd like to thing everyone is as nice as my friends and I are, but they aren't. I just ordered the USB data blockers you linked in the article - I've done my best to not plug in my phone or Kindle in any public areas, but I do find that in hotel rooms the only available plug for charging is a USB (and I'm not going to mess with having an extension cord running from the bathroom electrical outlet to the bedside because that's a recipe for a very unpleasant middle of the night fall).

easy answer to this one... my old knackered windows phone (don't ask - I liked the idea of being able to dev for my phone and I don't like spending £300 on a new phone) was dying within 3 hours and I couldn't get a spare battery .
I paid £10 for a remax universal charging unit 5000mAh - it can recharge my tablet, phone and ipod a few times a day
best bit is.. i'm not allowed to connect my phone (or any other data device) to my laptop because of company policy... but I can charge my battery from my laptop and hook the phone into the other end of the battery... et voila, no data connection to my laptop
its good for 3 days of travel and is no bigger than a mini snickers bar. It pretty much lives in my coat pocket anywhere I go.

Oh yeah, you'd never hear from me again if I ran a cord like that.

A thousand likes on this editorial, Grant! WOW, I've never heard of juice jacking or the rest of it. In this case, ignorance although it may be bliss, it can lead to getting hurt.

When traveling by plane or driving through a border crossing, I'm thinking it may be a good idea to perform a factory data reset on your phone, and then setup / restore your phone after arriving at the hotel. It's a minor inconvenience, but just in case airport security or border agents may seize your phone if you refuse to (or can not) unlock it, they at least won't have access to your data. Or, get a cheap Android phone with an alternate Google ID just for traveling.

I rarely travel outside the border, but I know some of us here do. What are your thoughts or solutions for this scenario?

Interesting approach but it's obviously a rising concern these days. I use 1password and they have a travel option that will basically remove your vault from your phone so that someone can't coerce you to unlock your device and have access to all of your passwords.

I used to work for a cyber security and anti-virus company. a lot of the research team used to put black insulation tape on phone cameras (both sides) and laptop cameras.
it wasn't until the BBC came in to interview us for a documentary that I saw one of our security experts hack the reporters laptop in about 30 seconds and gain access to video and sound. Now I know how wifi data points are so dangerous
