Dymanically Configured memory vs Fixed memory size

  • I'd always thought that, for example, a single server running nothing but SQL Server youd use dynamically manged memory and make sure you left some for the OS...

Now Im being told that no it should be set to a fixed size of 3/4 of the avail memory

I not sure I follow the rationale .. any views/words of wisdom etc etc ?

    thanks si

  • My preference is to set the max memory and let SQL manage the rest.

thank you Gail ... so can you see any rationale or reason as to why, or in which circumstances youd choose a fixed size ?
