IIS feature not known on Windows 2008 x64

  • Hi

Try to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise x64 on Windows Server 2008 x64.

The installation lists the requirements and complains about missing IIS

features. The webserver role and its IIS V6 compatibility features are

    installed and running.

So how we can make the server more intelligent?

    Thanks for help

  • It's been a while since I installed, but isnt' that just a "warning"?

If you don't need it, skip past it. If you don't know if you need it, you usually don't need it.

  • Reporting Services can not be choosen(grayed out) without detected IIS services - and they are needed.

  • Did you run any 32 bit applications on this server prior to installing SQL server 2005?

Verify that your are not running your IIS in 32 bit compatability mode:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894435

  • We began with a clean Windows Server, nothing was installed.

If the IIS6 admin compatibility is removed, it complains next to IIS feature about another "Reg. requirement for ASP.NET version".

  • 64 bit installation of SQL server on 64 bit Windows requires 64 bit version of ASP.NET

32 bit installation of Reporting services will require 32 bit version of ASP.

    There are two possibilities:

    1. You are running a wrong media (32 bit SQL server CD) .

    2. You have a 32 bit version of ASP installed on your Windows server.

For the second case, follow instructions in the article I referenced.

Ideally, you should provide an exact error message (check if it is associated with any additional messages in Event log).

  • It is the right package and nothing with 32bit is or was installed.

After adding the standard and windows authentication all features where known. It needs the IIS6 compatibility or it complains that the feature "Reg. requirement for ASP.NET version" is missed.

Finaly one can say that the pure IIS Role is not enough, some IIS features like IIS6 compatibility and authentication are needed for the 64bit installation on Windows 2008 64bit.

  • See Article 938245 on the Microsoft website. It details what components you need to install to be able to run RS on Win 2008. I have successfully used the document many times and can confirm its correctness
