Does the company allow employees to telecommute a good retaining tool?

  • My department is arguing if telecommute is good way to recruit and retain employees. One of the problem is depending your job. My manager is worried if he allows one employee to work at home but not the other one, it may create a problem. For example a technical support person vs a SQL developer, it is easy to let a SQL Developer to work from home but not the technical support.

  • Thought that I was going to start the same thing. I work for a company remotely. When I started I had moved to the area that the company was in but ended up needing to come back to my native state of NY. Thought I was going to have to leave a great company but they allowed me to go remote full time. They handled it great and the other employees are not bothered by it as far as I can tell.

    I will tell you though that I work longer and typically do not take much of a lunch so that I can have my presence felt to compensate for me not being there. I want the managment team to know that they are getting what they pay for and I want my co-workers to know that I am working as hard as they are. Personal conviction.

    There are a lot of articles on remote working being more effective, etc on CIO magazine website as well as throughout the net. Might be worthwhile to share some with the manager.

  • Maybe someday telecommuting will become so common that we can start working for companies in India.

    (Sorry, I just couldn't resist.)

  • A good manager has to handle that.

    Fair != same

    I have to explain that to my kids all the time. Can tech support work at home? No idea, but if it can be done, they should make an effort to make it happen. If it can't, that's the luck of the draw.

    If a manager things someone won't work, that's making an assumption, and we no what happens when you assume. Give someone a chance, set rules, make it a privilege that can be revoked.

  • Agreed Steve. Funny how working with people is very much like parenting. If you give someone a CLEAR set of guidelines / instructions and hold them accountable to that you can work great things. Somehow we seem to have forgotten that, both in the workplace and at home.

  • Yep, just like parenting. Treat them all different under the same rules. They earn and lose privileges, just like my kids. Give them rope, let them learn responsibilty, and hopefully mature.
