Connecting from Access 2003 to SQL Server 2005

  • I am having difficulty using SQL Server 2005 Developer edition with Access 2003. I am running Vista Home Premium, which maybe an issue, but according to the MS website you can use it.

I am able to connection an Access database to SQL Server tables using ODBC. However, it is very slow in opening tables.

I am not able to connect at all from an Access data project -- Window's Authentication issues.

I have installed SQL Server 2005 SP 2 and both the server and the Access applications are on the same machine.

    Thank you

  • I don't have a solution but you can check if the problem is related to MS office or SQL server.

Use a external SQL client and use the same ODBC connection to the SQL server to see what for respons you have. When you have a second system with SQL server you can try from Acces to use tables from that machine.

What is the CPU load when Access list the tables, maybe a resource issue?

  • Try allowing remote connections from Surface configuration tool. Also - make sure TCP/IP and/or named pipes are enabled.

Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?

  • Hi, not sure if this will help you. I am currently running Vista Business with SQL 2005 Developer Edition SP2 and it runs without a problem from a normal .mdb file. I have done numerous export to SQL 2005 and Vista seems to have no problems. I have enable remote connections to SQL 2005 and currently connect to it using username and password. I don't think I have got windows authentication working when using the UPSIZING wizard as I never saw the need. Maybe you can try setting a username and password on your SQL database and to connect through them from Access. Hope that helps 😎
