NORMAL upgrade method vs Rolling upgrade

  • Hi,

We an active/active/passive clustered sql server 2005. On node1 (active), we have one instance, on node2(active), 4 instances and on node3 is passive. All instances are SQL Sevrer 2005 EE x64 with SP3 on Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with SP2.Now we want to upgrade to SQL Sevrer 2008 using in-place upgrade method. For this we can have 12 hours down time accoring to the management. So we donot want to use the rollong upgrade . But want to use NORMAL upgrade method. i.e Directly upgrade the instance on active node1 first and then 4 instances on active node2 and then what to do on Passive node?

And more question on applying SQL Server 2008 SP1, after in-place upgrade is done

    1. Once the SQL instance on active node is done then immediately we need to apply the SP1? and then upgrade the 4 instance on node2, and then apply the SP1 for 4 nodes? or

2 Upgrade SQL instance on active node1 and upgrade 4 instance on active node2 and then finally apply SP1 on each node for all the SQL instances?

Please advice the correct order of steps. I already went through the document SQLServer2008FailoverCluster

  • Hi Mohan,

I did not understand that there are really two methods for inplace upgrade SQL Server 2008. i.e normal & rolling upgrade? could you please shed some light on the difference between them?

    Thanks
