Original Theatrical Release of Star Wars

  • I'm curious how many members on SSC saw the Original Theatrical Release of Star Wars.

  • I never saw any of the movies in the theater. I did have a "tradition" for few years of watching the first trilogy in it's entirety on Christmas before I had kids to spend the day with.

  • Yes, of course. Now it's a bit difficult to distinguish that experience from all the repeat viewings on television and the digitally enhanced re-release a couple of years ago, to say nothing of the film's tremendous influence on pop culture. The list of instantly recognizable quotes only starts with "Let the force be with you". It goes on with "These are not the Droids you seek", "Help me, Obi-wan; you're my only hope", "Let the wookie win", and probably half a dozen more from that one movie.

  • ... and of course "I'm gonna hit you with this crowbar until you go away!"

  • Yep, sad to say. :hehe:

And I still consider the opening sequence with Vader's Star Destroyer coming into view a touch of brilliance. No yet found an opening sequence as good since.

Far away is close at hand in the images of elsewhere.

  • As I mentioned elsewhere, I still remember thinking "That's a big spaceship".

Then Darth's Star Destroyer comes into view, and goes on and on and on and I thought "No! THAT's a BIG spaceship!"

  • I camped out in a line that went around the block multiple times and saw the first showing on opening day.

Saw it something like 30 times in the theatre the first year.

  • I saw it in the theater at an afternoon showing on opening day.

I remember setting close to a stew bum who kept getting woken up by the movie. It was common for street people to pan handle enough money to go to a cheap afternoon movie and get a few hours of sleep. He just happened to pick the opening day of one of the biggest movies of the time, so he wasn't getting much sleep.

So, you're telling us that Darth Vader wrote "Catcher in the Rye?";-)

  • I saw the original theatrical release when it was re-released in the theaters in the 1990's (forget which year). Does that count? 😀

  • I saw it with my parents at the Meadows Center Cinema duplex in Terre Haute, IN, USA.

    I was 6 years old.

It took a few days to get my jaw off of the ground.

    And btw, Han shot first!

No, John, that was a reference to a line by Terrence Mann (James Earl Jones) in "Field of Dreams".

I saw a parody video that showed footage of Barry... errr Darth Vader with lines from other movies in which James Earl Jones starred. The crowbar line was used as Vader approached Obi Wan for their final dual, charging up his lightsabre.

  • Well I was 10, and I thought it was the coolest movie I'd seen to date. I didn't see it opening day, but I waited in line a few days later and then saw it 3 or 4 times over the next few months.
