I need to upgrade sql server 2005 standard edition to enterprise.
is that any best practice articles and links?

i don't know of any articles, but i reckon everything that was working in the standard edition should still be working in the enterprise.

Everything you can imagine is real.

Hi,

We justed upgraded to enterprise for one of our customers. A good advice is to prepare your upgrade by backing up all of your vital components (databases, as db's, r's db's, config files etc.). Fortunately we didn't need any of those. The only thing we needed was the setup.exe SKUUPGRADE=1 command from the command prompt. Wait for sometime, install service pack 2 and within two hours we were up and running again.

Hi Marc,

We have a SQLServer 2005 Std edition instance with sp2. We would like to upgrade it to SQLServer 2005 Ent edition with sp2. It looks like you did the same for your customer. Could you answer these please :

1. Did you go to command prompt and being in main SQlServer 2005 Ent directory executed the "setup.exe SKUUPGRADE=1" command ?

2. Do you need to apply sp2 again even though you were on sp2 with Std. edition ?

3. Do you think that there would be same upgrade process if you were using 64 bit set up instead of 32 bit ? We actually have 64 bit install for this one.

We haven't done any upgrade yet but I'm investigating which steps we must take. When we've done the upgrade I would post the results on this forum.

Just done this today.

I had to upgarde two instance SQL Standard SP2 --> SQL Enterprise SP2.

Just Run "setup.exe SKUUPGRADE=1" as explained above. Then I selected each instance name and wnet through the motions.

Worked a treat. You need to reinstall SP2 though.

Just out of curiosity, what prompted your companies to move up from standard to enterprie edition?

I am trying to convince a major client (3000+ users, very data-intensive business) to not try to save money on the Sql Server version and go directly to Enterprise, but the lack of technical sophistication and full grasp on the amount of processing that this business is going to generate stands in the way.

I need some serious arguments to generate some knee-jerk reaction and save them and us serious headache and potential problems in production.

Hi,

I read the posts here and the MS articles and installed the upgrade adviser.

They don't seem to have any other alternative than in-place(not for 32bit-64bit upgrade) or side-by-side. The upgrade adviser is not intended for a 2005 Standard SP2 to 2005 EE upgrade apparently, it gave an error saying it doesn't do our version.

We have only one SQL Server 2005 server (running on a 32bit server) so side-by-side isn't going to work....will it?

It is my understanding that Windows Server 2003 needs to be reinstalled to run 64bit version of the OS, so are we stuck with "re"installing SQL 2005 Enterprise 64bit after the OS install. Any suggestions/resources on doing this type of upgrade?

We also are going from a two processor license to a one processor license, any info on this type of thing would be helpful.
