Azure Cosmos DB Consistency Levels

The majority of traditional database management systems are responsible for making sure that any changes to their data are consistently reflected in the results of subsequent queries. Azure Cosmos DB extends the range of consistency options by providing support for bounded-staleness, session, and consistent prefix models.  Read more...

The COUNT Function in T-SQL

The COUNT function is among the most used functions in the T-SQL codes. Even though COUNT is easy to use, it should be used carefully because it could often not return the desired result. For the big tables, the counting of the rows could cause blocking as well as take some more time.  Read more...

Stairway to Advanced T-SQL Level 6: Creating Rows Of Data Using The UNPIVOT Operator

The UNPIVOT operator does just the opposite of the PIVOT operator, which we looked at in the previous level. By using the PIVOT operator we can take multiple rows of data and create as single row as output. The UNPIVOT operator will take values from a single row and will create multiple rows. Microsoft introduced the UNPIVOT operator when they rolled out SQL Server 2005. In this level I will be showing you different examples of how to use the UNPIVOT operator.  Read more...

How to use the SQL Prompt snippet placeholders for selecting and copying text

There are four SQL Prompt snippet placeholders that are all about selection and copying of text. These placeholders are very handy if, for example, you have two blocks of code that need to be part of a snippet. One part you hold on the clipboard, and the other part is a block of snippet text, selected using the $SELECTEDTEXT$ placeholder.  Read more...

Free eBook: SQL Server Execution Plans, Third Edition

If a query is performing poorly, and you can't understand why, then that query's execution plan will tell you not only what data set is coming back, but also what SQL Server did, and in what order, to get that data. It will reveal how the data was retrieved, and from which tables and indexes, what types of joins were used, at what point filtering, sorting and aggregation occurred, and a whole lot more. These details will often highlight the likely source of any problem.  Read more...

SSIS Package with a Derived Column

I created this article to demonstrate the use of derived columns inside a ForEachLoop Container for a client requirement for some auxiliary marketing reports. I found the Data Conversion tool useful to escape the problem of mismatched data types, which is an issue with versions of Microsoft SSIS.  Read more...

Realistic, simulated data for testing, development and prototypes

This article proposes a scheme for using Redgate SQL Data Generator (SDG) as a ‘data generation and translation’ tool. We generate the data using a free copy of SQL Server Express, and then use standard bulk copy mechanisms to translate it to various formats, then distribute it out to the different data technologies and platforms that require a copy of the data. The tool becomes a mechanism to support ‘polyglot persistence’.  Read more...

Building a Custom Blocked Process Report

Blocking in SQL Server is normal behavior, but excessive blocking can lead to many complaints and is a symptom of poor performance. SQL Server contains a vast amount of information that can help when troubleshooting performance issues like blocking, but understanding and gathering that information when you need it is a lot of work. Darko Martinovic explains his solution for a custom blocking report.  Read more...
