I made a series of resolutions in January related to SQLServerCentral. These are things that I wanted to accomplish this year, things to work on, and it’s time to check how I am doing for through the second quarter. I’ve copied the list below and included my updates as of June.

  1. Continue with 400 posts a month – I’m doing well here. I have over 2500 for the year, so I'm meeting this goal.
  2. Blog Daily – My blog count is actually doing very well. I've been getting at least one a day, sometimes two.
  3. Speak at each Denver area user group – I completed this in Q1, but I have 2 more user group presentations scheduled for the year.
  4. Speak at one SQLSaturday – Pensacola is is complete. I've been asked to go to Baton Rouge and Iowa, so we'll see.
  5. Comment on blog posts that I think are interesting. I comment regularly here when I see something I like. I haven’t commented on all blog posts, but I’ve done most of them when I have something to say.
  6. Update my blog roll to show who I think is interesting. I should at least do this monthly. I updated my list in June, but not May, so I'm not doing this regularly enough. Probably not searching out new blogs often enough.
  7. Grow the SSC audience to 1.4mm members by the end of the year. As of the end of June, or close to it, we are at 1.18, which is low. I was hoping for 1.2 or better, to get to the 1.4 number by the end of the year. We'll see if we get there.
  8. Give all new articles a first review within 7 days. Still failing horribly here. Usually it's within 2 weeks, but not always. My Q is almost to zero for my end of June vacation, so maybe I will get better.
  9. Not miss sending any newsletters. I think I missed 3 this year. I missed 2 with our Zone Edit outage, and one was my fault.
  10. Build something useful with .NET/SQL Server. It needs to be for SSC.  I still need a project here.

How am I doing on my New Year’s Resolutions for SQLServerCentral? I decided to make another update as Q1 has ended. Here are the goals from my first post and an update to my status.

  1. Continue with 400 posts a month – I’m doing better here. 399 in Feb, but well over 400 for March. I’ve over 1200 for the quarter.
  2. Blog Daily – My blog count for March is 32, so I did well there. 81 for Q1.
  3. Speak at each Denver area user group – I’ve spoken to the Denver (Jan), Boulder (Feb), and Colorado Springs (Mar) groups, and also remotely to the Charlotte group in March. Complete!
  4. Speak at one SQLSaturday – Pensacola is scheduled for June. I might do another one.
  5. Comment on blog posts that I think are interesting. I comment regularly here when I see something I like. I haven’t commented on all blog posts, but I’ve done most of them when I have something to say.
  6. Update my blog roll to show who I think is interesting. I should at least do this monthly. I’ve done this twice. I updated my list in March to add a few and removed a couple as well.
  7. Grow the SSC audience to 1.4mm members by the end of the year. We are at 1.05 at the end of March. That puts us more like 1.2 by EOY. I think I was counting on growth, but with the economy, I might not see as many people coming here on a regular basis. Lots of other new sites as well.
  8. Give all new articles a first review within 7 days. I am failing here. I am still getting too many articles. I tracked this two weeks in March. One week I got 12,on eI  got 17.
  9. Not miss sending any newsletters. I think I missed 3 this year. so far so good.
  10. Build something useful with .NET/SQL Server. It needs to be for SSC.  I’m thinking of redoing my personal site, but I’ve been looking at Dot Net Nuke, so that wouldn’t qualify. Still need a project.

Measuring My Goals

Yesterday I wrote about some goals for 2009 here at SQLServerCentral. It’s a list of stuff that I want to accomplish in 2009. However I didn’t give any way to determine if I’m successful in meeting the goals. I guess you could say that getting to the goals is the best way to measure things, but I think that I could get close in some areas and call things a success. Or at least a reasonable attempt.

For example, I would like to get 400 posts a month. That was a goal in 2008 and I didn’t make it every month, but I did get 4800+ for the year. Is that a success? I think so. What if I got to 350 a month, was that an honest effort? I think that would be my line for miserable failure if I can’t get an average of 350 a month.

So with that in mind: (answers in italics)

  • Continue with 400 posts a month – 4800 for the year is a success, but 350 a month average is a good effort.
  • Blog Daily – If I can average 4 a week, I think that’s a success
  • Speak at each Denver area user group – Got to get to each one here. 2 of the 3 won’t count.
  • Speak at one SQLSaturday – I hate traveling and I’m already booked for 5 trips, so if I can attend a SQLSaturday, I think that’s good.
  • Comment on blog posts that I think are interesting. – I’m not sure how to measure this. I hate to blog about commenting. I should probably be able to remember the last 3 at any given time of the year.
  • Update my blog roll to show who I think is interesting. – I’ll set a reminder to do this. I guess if my blog roll changes, this is good. Not sure how to measure this other than track the changes.
  • Grow the SSC audience to 1.4mm members by the end of the year. – this one is easy to measure. The front page captures the info
  • Give all new articles a first review within 7 days. I’ll have to self-measure this, but I think if I can do this with 90% of the articles, I'm in good shape.
  • Not miss sending any newsletters. I think I missed 3 this year. – I’ll have to blog about this and keep track of it.
  • Build something useful with .NET/SQL Server. - I’m not sure what to do here, but I’d like to use this to get a bit more techincal. Likely I’ll use SS2K8 and some part of SSRS or SSAS to do this. We’ll see what happens.
  • I think these are pretty good measures, though I’d be curious to see what people think of them.

    Catching Up

My goal of 400 posts a month has been in jeopardy with all the traveling I've been doing over the last two months. I was down to 309 this weekend (rolling 30 days) and get worried.

So I've been making an effort over the last 3 days and I'm back to 350. Not sure how many more I'll get with Thanksgiving coming up, but I'm going to keep chugging along through December. 4221 for the year, so I'm about 500 short right now. I need 150 more for Nov, which isn't looking good.

    Back to 400

I had to research a bit, write some code, and look up things to answer questions this morning. I must have had a spurt this time last month because no sooner had I written about Meeting My Goal, then I got up Saturday to find myself back down in the 380s. The the 370s on Sunday.

So I worked my way through the forums, reading quite a few posts I couldn't answer, dropping in on more and trying to give good answers. It's been a busy morning getting caught up. And there's no good way around it. I get busy and miss days, so while I might post 10-15 times some days, I might post 0-3 times others, which means I have some 25 post days.
