The Best Database Engine - Why Did I Write This?

,

Why did I write this? I got challenged by Andy Warren

to write a bit about why I wrote something. I complained to him that he

has some "mechanical" posts on this blog that just mention he wrote

something with some questions, and don't really blog about why he wrote

something. He challenged me to write about why I wrote something, so

here I am.

I found the article from this editorial while researching Database Weekly in a few places. I thought it was a sensationalist headline, though before I read the article I was all set to tackle this as a MySQL can't beat SQL server article. Instead as I read through it, I took the "all platforms are equivalent" tact, which is something I believe.

I like SQL Server, and think it's a great platform, but I don't necessarily think it performs better than any other. The idea was to get that opinion out there, maybe stimulate some debate. I like to pick fun of the Oracle folks, but honestly I don't know much about other platforms. I worked again Oracle 7 years ago, but nothing since then, and while I've installed and played a little with MySQL and PostgreSQL, I'm nowhere near competent, much less an expert. However I think they're all fine products...

when they're used well.
