RealSQLGuy - Helping You To Become A SQL Hero

My real name is Tracy McKibben. I’ve been working with database products for over 20 years, starting with FoxBase running on Xenix. Over the years, I’ve worked with all flavors of FoxPro, some Clipper and dBase, and starting somewhere around 1995, SQL Server. I’ve even dabbled with Oracle, though I’ve tried to block out all memories of that experience. At present, I’m the Senior SQL Server DBA and the DBA Team Supervisor for Pearson VUE. All opinions expressed on this site are my own and do not reflect the opinions of Pearson VUE.

Thaw, Rinse, Repeat – #SQLPlunge

Three years ago in March of 2011, on a whim, I jumped into a hole in a frozen lake into ice-cold water wearing pajamas and boxer shorts. I was a one-man team, a shriveled army of one. I had a blast, and made a short little video to show just… Read more

Sometimes It’s A Dirty Job – #TSQL2sDAY #50

Sometimes being a DBA really stinks. You try to follow best practices in everything you do. You’re not shrinking databases on a daily basis. You’re not using the auto-close option on your databases. You know you’re not supposed to flush the procedure cache on a live server. Sometimes though, in… Read more

That Awkward Moment When I Started Channeling Brent Ozar

If you read my end-of-year post (you did, right?), you’ll recall that I mentioned that 2013 was a tough year for me. I’ve (the whole team actually) been stressed, unhappy, and just generally miserable in my job. At one point I was looking for a way out. Things are getting… Read more
