Like many of you out there, I’m constantly looking for new things to learn. A new skill, a new hobby, a new word. I’m a sucker for gadgets and gizmos, self-help books, “life hacks”, recipes, brain games, all of the standard nerd attractions. I’m also easily distracted by shiny things, which led me to Tom LaRock’s blog post Why Your Performance Review Sucks.

You could go read Tom’s post, but since it’s kind of long and wordy, I’ll summarize it for you – instead of trying to fix your weaknesses, focus on taking advantage of your strengths. Makes a lot of sense if you stop to think about it. In his blog post, Tom recommends the book Strengths Finder 2.0, which I’d not heard of before. It’s a quick read, followed by a 20-minute assessment, after which you’re presented with a customized profile of your strengths and some recommended “next actions”. It’s shockingly accurate and, for me anyway, the actions that it recommends really seem appropriate. They won’t all help me to be a better DBA, but they could help me to be a better employee, teammate, or person overall.

My strengths, according to the assessment, are:

I’ve also made the full personality assessment available here – those of you know me, go have a look and tell me (leave a comment below) if you think it’s accurate.
