RealSQLGuy - Helping You To Become A SQL Hero

My real name is Tracy McKibben. I’ve been working with database products for over 20 years, starting with FoxBase running on Xenix. Over the years, I’ve worked with all flavors of FoxPro, some Clipper and dBase, and starting somewhere around 1995, SQL Server. I’ve even dabbled with Oracle, though I’ve tried to block out all memories of that experience. At present, I’m the Senior SQL Server DBA and the DBA Team Supervisor for Pearson VUE. All opinions expressed on this site are my own and do not reflect the opinions of Pearson VUE.

The Value of Writing Good

Most of my peers, and likely yours as well, work in some sort of technical field. Odds are that they’re proficient readers who can digest the driest of technical material. They’re probably good with math, and a large portion of them are likely science geeks. How many of them can… Read more

Little Java Boy

I didn’t want to repeat the Night Before Upgrade again this year, so I wrote something new. Go ahead, sing along, you know the tune!

Go, they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
The D-B-A to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Your query runs too slow, pa rum… Read more

New version of sp_BackupDatabases released this morning, first update that I’ve made available in a while. I’ve been running this version myself for months, so it’s well-tested, I just forgot to post the update here.

Changes in this version:

– Include brackets around database name in all commands, in case… Read more

This post has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with SQL Server. It does, however, relate to your career as a deskbound, stressed-out IT professional. With that disclaimer out of the way, you may continue reading if you’d like.

A couple of things happened in the past week that led to… Read more

Invite for #TSQL2sday #59 – My Hero!

It is T-SQL Tuesday again, for the 59th month in a row. Next month marks FIVE YEARS of T-SQL Tuesday, introduced by Adam Machanic (B|T) way back in 2009.

I’m hosting this month, but the topic actually comes from Wendy Pastrick (B|T).… Read more
