Hardware 201:Selecting and Sizing Database Hardware for OLTP Performance

I did a presentation for the fourth hour of 24 Hours of PASS – Fall 2010 today, which was a lot of fun. We had about 450 attendees for the session, which was a pretty decent turnout. A recording of the session will be available on September 27. I have added the PowerPoint for the presentation to SkyDrive here. Clicking on that link should open the presentation as a PowerPoint Web App.

Really enjoyed the presentation.  Thanks.  It led me to check on the the power plan options on my newest Dell 610s which were, of course, still set at the default, Balanced.  Unfortunately, our Server lead would rather I not change these to High Performance because then they'd be non-standard.  I passed Brad McGehee's posting on this subject and your conversation.  <Crickets>

Sorry to hear that you cannot convince your Server lead to change that setting in Windows. Don't forget that you will probably have to also go into the BIOS and change the Power Management setting there to OS Control (depending on what Dell set it to at the factory).  Good luck!
