According to a study by PayScale, and published in the July/August 2009 issue of Inc. Magazine, Database Administrators make more than Web Developers, IT Managers, Programmer Analysts, and Software Developers (in this order of ranking).
In addition, the study shows that the more experience the DBA has, the more he or she makes. For example, a DBA with 10 years experience makes about 72% more than a DBA with 1 years experience.

That's one reason I got into this business.

We are also more in demand. I get 15 - 20 opportunites a week for DBA and BI work still.
I focused on DBA work because I enjoy the particular puzzles and happen to have efficient logic solving skills. The pay rates are lagniappe, but appreciated. :)

Not gonna lie, I second Steve's comment

I didn't think about salary when I decided to focus on DBA work. I started out as a Network Engineer, but felt that there was too much competition, and I wanted to find a more specialized area, and selected database administration because I had always enjoyed working with databases in several previous jobs. I think I made a good choice.

Many people including myself switch to DB administration in their mid career. Better pay rate is also a factor. Along with that it is a passion to build or efficiently manage the databases.

Make money is needed, but in my opinion the most important is to enjoy your work.

Alex your response hits the mark.

I must say, the pay, not being unemployed for long if you lose your job and how much I enjoy the work are all great things. But the #1 reason is to get women. You tell them you're a DBA and they're all over you. Being single, 27 and a DBA is great! I guess a close second would be that we mostly work on servers that aren't right in front of us so working from home is a much better possibility than for a garbage man, firefighter or werewolf.
