Like a lot of other SQL Server bloggers, this week I will attempt to write regular blog entries each day, and hopefully include some photographs of the activities I attend. I am not an “official” PASS blogger, but I will try and offer my perspective of the event, with my… Read more

Not Attending/Presenting at SQL Connections
Given everything that has happened in the last couple of weeks, this is not surprising to those who have kept up with my family's most recent struggle. I had one more big decision to make from a professional side of things and that was whether or not to still attend… Read more

The Gift Count
I went by Best Buy this afternoon, with my updated budget, to grab 2 last gifts and blow out the money. We’re now at 65 gifts, according to my daughter’s count. Lots of DVDs and books, but I’ve added in a few nicer things that we’ll randomly give away:
- A…

SQL Server 2008 cluster install and slipstreaming!
I was asked to set up a SQL Server 2008 cluster on Windows 2008 R2 this past week. One interesting issue I ran into was that only SQL 2008 SP1 is supported on Win 2008 RW. In that past, that meant that you could just do the SQL cluster install… Read more

More PASS Activities
As if I needed more.
I’ll be sitting at the blogger table and blogging live (as live as I get) during the keynotes. It should be fun. As I said on Twitter, this means I get to pick on the cool kids. Life is good.
Thursday I’ll be doing a…

Happy Halloween to the DBA - Pumpkin Carving as a Team Building Exercise
The past couple of days we have had some fun with a Team Building exercise by means of designing our Pumpkin for an internal competition between teams. Unfortunately we did not win anything, nor even make the top three, but we certainly did have some fun – and… Read more

Heading back to Seattle
I love visiting Seattle, even in November. Getting to catch up with old friends and meet new people is always the highlight of my trip. Don’t get me wrong, the training is awesome and I always learn so much, but I am a social creature. I can always go to… Read more

When Technical Support Fails You
I have had the pleasure of being a vendor, and technical support for both hardware and software products. I know it isn’t easy. I know it isn’t always possible to fix everything. The level of support I’ve received from HP on my current issue is just unacceptable. This is made… Read more

MCTS: Business Intelligence Developer 2008 & MCITP: Business Intelligence Developer 2008
I am not about to get into a theoretical discussion of whether certifications will benefit you in your career. I am a firm believer that this follows the rule of “it depends”. However if you’re a professional in a field, whether plumbing or technology, certification is a good way… Read more

OFF-TOPIC: God is Still Good, Even as We Mourn
Kimberly and I went to the high risk doctor's office this morning for the ultrasound. Unfortunately, they realized very quickly that both children had passed away. There was no heartbeat. They suspect Twin-to-Twin Transfusion syndrome. We are in mourning and have begun the procedures to ensure Kimberly's health. Support from… Read more

Running to the PASS Summit
Well, not literally. I’m not going to run to Seattle from Denver, but I’ll be running at the Summit.
Last year when the Summit took place, I was about 70 days into my running streak. I was worried about keeping it going at the Summit since it’s a busy week… Read more

Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives – In Seattle
If you’re going to spend 3-5 days in Seattle at the PASS Summit it’s worth sampling the local food rather than sticking with the ‘safe’ chain choices. I enjoy Diners, Drive-In’s, and Dives on the Food Network, so I grabbed the list of restaurants they had featured from Seattle. Haven’t… Read more

Suggested Max Memory Settings for SQL Server 2005/2008
It is pretty important to make sure you set the Max Server memory setting for SQL Server 2005/2008 to something besides the default setting (which allows SQL Server to use as much memory as it wants, subject to signals from the operating system that it is under memory pressure). This…
