Meredith Ryan Chosen as the Exceptional DBA of 2012

,

CAMBRIDGE, UK, September 5, 2012 – Meredith Ryan has been elected Exceptional DBA of 2012 by a judging panel of world famous DBAs and the SQLServerCentral community. The international awards program, now in its fifth year, is hosted by SQLServerCentral and sponsored by Red Gate.

Steve Jones, judge and founder of SQLServerCentral, was impressed by Ryan’s commitment to the community. “Being exceptional isn’t just about having the greatest technical expertise. You need that willingness to help others – no matter if it’s the guy from across the room or across the Pacific. Meredith has that in spades.”

Ryan described the award as “truly an honor – I entered with no real expectation of becoming a finalist, let alone winning. I still find it incredible!”

Ryan will be presented with her trophy in an awards ceremony at the 2012 PASS Summit in Seattle, for which she receives full conference registration, four nights’ accommodation, and $300 travel expenses.

Along with four other finalists, she receives a copy of Red Gate’s SQL DBA Bundle with three years’ of support and upgrades.

Part of the community

Ryan serves as the sole DBA for The Bell Group, an international supplier to the jewelry industry. She chairs the Women in Technology Virtual PASS Chapter, and is a board member of the Albuquerque NM PASS chapter.

Fully self-taught, she is not only keen to master any new technology she encounters, but also a stalwart champion of education for new and accidental DBAs. She can regularly be found pitching in on the #SQLHELP hashtag, writing on her blog, or talking at SQL Saturday events. As Ryan says, “It isn't enough just to learn – I need to share that knowledge.”

“I relied on the community a whole bunch while I was learning to become a DBA, and if anything it’s become even more valuable to me. Giving back and helping to keep it going just seems to make sense.”
