Can the database be included in DevOps in financial services?

For many DBAs who work in financial services, deploying database changes is the most taxing part of the job. Being required to review thousands of lines of script can take days, depending on how many errors you find. Even when database deployments are better planned, it’s not an easy journey, and DBAs are often regarded as the blocker in the process, the ones who are causing the problem rather than trying to resolve it  Read more...

Creatures of habit, snowflakes, and integration tax

Why are practices like version control, continuous integration and automated deployment being introduced to application development but left on the shelf when it comes to the database? In search of some answers, Redgate spoke to Donovan Brown, Principal DevOps Manager at Microsoft and DevOps advocate. Also known as The Man in the Black Shirt, his unofficial tagline is #RubDevOpsOnIt. He lives DevOps - here's what he had to say.  Read more...

Database Code Analysis

Database code analysis will reduce the number of 'code smells' that creep into your database builds. It will alert the team to mistakes or omissions, such as missing indexes, that are likely to cause performance problems in production. It will allow the Governance and Operations team visibility into production readiness of the code, warning them of security loopholes and vulnerabilities. William Brewer describes the two technical approaches to database code analysis, static and dynamic, and suggests some tools that can help you get started.  Read more...

You’re not delivering DevOps to the database

"There have been, and, in our increasingly connected and interconnected world, will continue to be, a large number of spectacular failures with technology. I want to point the finger at all of us for these failures. It’s not Development. It’s not Operations. It’s us. We’re in it together. If we don’t communicate with each other, share our knowledge, we’re going to mess up horribly."  Read more...
