The Voice of the DBA

The myth of the ‘shared development model’

This is a guest editorial from Phil Factor as Steve is on Sabbatical.

Database developers usually like to have a sandbox install of SQL Server to try things out, and develop stuff on, and a shared development server to do performance and integration testing for the databases they are working on. When a job gets to the stage that it passes all its unit tests and test assertions, then it gets onto the development server and thrashed. When it does what it is supposed to, with decent performance under load, and conforms to the error-handling standards in place, the job gets into the build, but not before.

Three points about this:

  • Firstly, this simple process causes confusion because some people perceive two different development models in this simple mode of work, and talk grandly about ‘shared’ and ‘local’ development models. Absurd. For a start, in my experience the sandbox often isn’t local and really should never be, and often gets shared (but only with a friend). We use both.
  • Secondly, there is the idea that having more than one developer working on a shared server is going to cause problems because they’d be working on the same code and both try to make changes. Before the introduction of schemas, it used to be possible, though it never happened to me.
  • Thirdly, there is the debate ‘at what point does your code get into source control?’. There seems to be some divergence of opinion here too. Unless the performance, and integration, testing of your job is done on the current build, you can’t be confident that it isn’t going to break something on integration. This implies that the shared server should be rebuilt from what is in source control. If the shared development database gets rebuilt overnight automatically from your VCS, then you can’t leave unsaved work on the shared server. This implies that work shouldn’t go into ‘trunk’ in source control until it is finished, and if your job is going to take some time, then it should be in a separate branch, and then merged. However, isn’t it more logical to just save the script for an unfinished job in secure storage occasionally? After all, it is only one person working on it and it doesn’t matter hugely if it gets lost. Actually, I prefer to lose jobs occasionally since I always seem to write SQL far better the next time around. I’ve never ever ‘reverted’ SQL code during active development.

I like the idea of development teams finding a method of work that suits them rather than try to try to impose ‘best practices’ on them. As long as the source of all versions is in source control and the current version can be built from what is in source control, who cares? What do you think?

Question of the Day

Today's Question (by Andy Warren):

--From The Blog of John Watson

Today we received an interesting and unusual client here at our temporary office in Celebration (a city in Florida). A reasonably average looking man arrived without an appointment. Thinning hair, a Van Dyke beard, otherwise unremarkable in appearance. He was clearly nervous and in a hurry. After a very brief introduction he shared his problem and I'll try to share with you the essence of the conversation.

Van Dyke: Mr. Holmes, I am a database administrator and I have run into a problem that I need your help to solve. Lives may be at risk!

Holmes: Really now, that serious? Tell me about it.

Van Dyke: Mr Holmes, I have discovered that some of the user accounts in my databases have suddenly developed a mysterious red arrow that points downward. I don't know why this has happened, but I suspect foul play.

Holmes: Show me.

Van Dyke: This is SQL Server Management Studio (we call it SSMS) and if we drill down like so, you can see the users here, and here, and here - they have those horrible red arrows! I believe they have been targeted by the evil No-SQL'ers!

Holmes: Nonsense. Surely a brilliant local SQL group leader like yourself could figure this out - the problem is indeed elementary!

Holmes figured it out and gave our overly dramatic client the answers, and I've included them here along with some wrong answers so you can work on your detective skills! Which of the following could have caused these mysterious red arrows? And while you're thinking on it, how did Holmes deduce that our client was a local SQL group leader?

Think you know the answer? Click here, and find out if you are right.

Yesterday's Question of the Day

Yesterday's Question (by Andy Warren):

Using SQL Server 2012, which of the following activities will use a table created with an integer identity column with a seed of -2147483648?

Answer: Replication

Explanation:

Replication is the correct answer. The table MStracer_tokens is created with the maximum negative seed (tracers are used to measure latency within replication). You can see this by setting up a replication distribution agent using the UI and then checking the table that is created:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MStracer_tokens](

[tracer_id] [int] IDENTITY(-2147483648,1) NOT NULL,

[publication_id] [int] NOT NULL,

[publisher_commit] [datetime] NOT NULL,

[distributor_commit] [datetime] NULL,

PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED

(

[tracer_id] ASC

)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]

) ON [PRIMARY]

Log Shipping and Backup are both incorrect, neither has by default a table with a negative seed. That also means that All three - Log Shipping, Backup, and Replication is incorrect.

Negative seeds aren't supported for integer columns is also incorrect. The range of an INT is -2,147,483,648 to  2,147,483,647. Here's a blog post on using negative seeds. The BOL page at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186775.aspx doesn't say it is or isn't allowed - but it is!

Notes: I ran across this bit of trivia while checking the number of values remaining for identity columns to see if any where in danger of running out. Negative seeds are fairly unusual, perhaps most commonly used when a int column that was seeded at 1 runs out of numbers - you can start using the negative half of the range! I imagine the tracer token table was set with a negative to try to guard against it running out of value.

It's also amusing, that at least as I write this, that searching for -2147483648 returns zero results on Google and Bing!

Avoid Transaction Logs volume from filling

Daniel Marques from SQLServerCentral.com

When you have the recovey model's of your databases in Full you always have to make backups of your transaction logs in order to truncate them and release space inside the logs.

When you have a lot of databases with many transactions and a not so big volume for logs it's common to have a full drive. So you have to make that annoying log backup and shrink to release some space in the drive and have your databases back on track.

Since i have this problem in a regular basis, i decided to make a simple script to minimize this problem.

How to use:

- Create the folder defined on the script

- Set the limit of free space you want on the script in MB

- Just run or put the script on a job

Important note:

To have a successfull backup of your ts log you first need a full backup of your database. The script doesnt make a full backup of the db, assuming that you have a job for that.

Use and abuse, report bugs, make some tweaks...Enjoy!
