SSC Forum RSS Feed Permission Denied

  • When adding some RSS feeds for forums to Google Reader I get "Permission Denied" for several of them (but not all!). Any idea? A few examples:

    Worked: 2008 General, 2008 T-SQL

    Failed: 2008 HA

    It looks like :

You have subscribed to "Permission Denied.."

"Permission Denied." has no unread items.

    Que desu?

  • No idea. I'll test tomorrow

  • A bit of digging... seems like you probably have to be logged in to have access to the feed as I can open the RSS link in my browser and see the XML spew but when my reader tries to fetch it auths are failing - perhaps because my reader (google reader) doesn't have a cookie to offer up?

  • Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised it you need to be logged in to pull these. I have all my computers logged in, so Reader seems to work for me. I'll have to track down another one, kill some cookies, and see.

  • I do use the same browser for both SSC and GR - I don't have any way to hand the cookie off to GR to feed the RSS server. I've tried this with both Chrome and Firefox.

  • I'm having the same problem, I can subscribe to some SSC RSS feeds in Google Reader without a problem, but others just show up as 'Permission Denied."

The only difference I can see is that the ones tht work have a number under a 1000, and the ones that don't are over 1000.

    this works: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/RssFeed391-0-0-1.aspx

    this does not: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/RssFeed1044-0-0-1.aspx

I don't know if the problem is on the SSC or Google Reader side. Any ideas?

  • Steve,

I think it is related to being logged in. If I am not logged in to SSC then I can only see a subset of the forums when I click on the "Forums" link on the right. Those are the same forums I can subscribe to in Google Reader via RSS.

Is there a reason that some forums can't be viewed by anonymous users? (Through both a browser and RSS.) Is it intended to be that way?

  • I don't think we intended this, but we'll have to decide how to handle it.

  • Thanks for looking at this. I would vote for all of the forums to be viewable by anonymous users either by web browser or RSS reader.

  • Second that

  • I am having this issue as well with the "SQL 2012 - General" forum (RSS). It does not seem to matter whether I am logged into SSC or not.

When not logged in I can still see the Forum on http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/[/url] so none that theory doest not seem to fit either.

The "forum number is above 1000" sounded plausible, but I have no trouble with "SQL Server 2005 / SQL Server Newbies" which is RSS feed 1291.

I tried in Chrome and IE.

Any ideas on why this occurs, or guidance on how to resolve?
