problem with your e-mail newsletter format?

  • Firefox on a 1366 x 768 screen

The past few days the e-mail doesn't fit in my screen width-wise.

    Horizontal-scrolling would be a terrible option, but I don't even get a horizontal scroll-bar.

Only option to view the entire text is start selecting a line of text and continue selecting over the right margin ...and it scrolls. Then I have to reverse the procedure to read the beginning of the next line. And repeat :crying:

    Is it just me?

Issues prior to 20th May still work fine (so it's not my Firefox playing stupid).

24th May and later issues don't work.

(I didn't keep 21st...23rd May to narrow the date down more)

  • In case it can help you, maybe you can read straight from the ssc site here : http://www.sqlservercentral.com/NewsletterArchive

  • That works, thanks.

...but it would be nice to be able to read the mails

  • Of course... but while they work on it... :w00t:

  • Where/how are you reading mails?

  • Fair question!

BUT the same where/how continues to work today on your mailed newsletters dated 20th May 2010 or earlier.

    Actual where/how is:

    WinVista(all updates)/laptop/32bit 1366x768

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729)

    Reading off a webmail server.

...and what other details would you like?

I have forwarded a couple of the troublesome newsletter-mails to another machine (Win7, OL2007) to see what happens there, but I can't get to that machine until tomorrow morning).

  • So we send the same HTML that you get on the web to your client. In terms of how it renders, I know that my webmail (GoDaddy), and GMail, is substantially different than what I get in Outlook. There are some strange CENTERing tags in place.

Since we dynamically load some things into the newsletter, occasionally we have really wide newsletters from a forum post. I catch them sometimes, but depending on scheduling, it sometimes slips through.

We are talking about moving the forum posts to a new newsletter.

  • The direct link (posted by <I wish I could see when I'm replying> above) works fine.

I'll let you know what turns up in the forwarded mails to the Win7/OL machine.

It could certainly be my webmail provider - they have been going thru a series of "improvements" the past couple of months.

  • If you want, send both files as HTML to us and I'll have someone dig through the differences. Maybe we can figure out what email systems are doing.

    Send to the webmaster.

  • hmmmmm!

Today's (28th May) newsletter works OK with my webmail!

Did something change overnight in the format of your newsletter?

The newsletter of 25th May works fine when forwarded to my Win7/OL2007 machine so the webmail system has not corrupted your file. This 25th newsletter still does not work today in my webmail under FFox or IE suggesting that my webmail provider (Swisscom) has not changed something in the webmail browser script to (re-)enable reading your newsletter.

Anyhow, I can read the newsletter in webmail again (for now), so I'm happy (for now).

  • No changes in the format for a few months. We actually have an XSD document that transforms a bunch of data returned by various queries. It's been a stable template for over a month.

My guess is something in the data itself, likely the forums, caused it to scroll.

    Glad it's working.

    Steve
