I worked at a company where an AS400 system operator was supposed to be monitoring jobs. Something had gone wrong. A manager wanted to know why he didn't do anything about it like tell someone what was going on. He said he was only monitoring. Taking action was not in his job description.

I interviewed a sysadmin once who said that the action he would take if he detected strange behaviour on the intranet would be to note it in his next monthly report. We didn't ask him many questions after that. And I've known a few people who took their job descriptions extremely literally (which in theory should be easy to cope with, as computers take their programmes very literally so it's a problem we should all be used to in this business) and except in very junior positions requiring absolutely no initiative that can be a real pain in the butt if you don't get the job description right.
