It's true, is very important to have a professional development plan.
I like to read Microsoft Resource Kit books, because they have a well defined sequence to study. This kind of book help us to be prepared to take an exam too.
Another suggestion is to visit recruitment websites periodically, to check what kind of ability has been asked by the market.
