Should I give "70-431" or "70-432" exam.?

  • Dear All,

Am planning to give "70-431 - MCTS SQL Server 2005 Implementation and Maintenance exam" within 2 weeks.

Shall I go ahead or should I prepare for "70-432 - MCTS SQL Server 2008" exam.? Are these two totaly different..?

Have almost finished preparing for "70-431" exam.

    Please adivce.

    Thanks in advance.

  • If your working in a predominately 2005 environment then it would make sense to do that exam as you have already studied for it. If you are (or are likely to be) working a lot with 2008 then i would probably do that straight after my 2005 exam. A lot of the exam will be similar i would imagine, you would just have to learn the "new features".

A lot of companies dont seem to be migrating to 2008 as they dont see any major benefits (the biggest benefits come in the enterprise edition) so the 2005 cert would certinaly not be useless.

  • Thanks for your quick reply.

I work in SQL Server 2005 and have never worked in SQL Server 2008. Hence I will go ahead with "70-431" exams.

Hope this certification will be valid for few years atleast.

    Thanks once again.

  • I would take a different approach and go straight for the SQL 2008 certification.

Our company is taking the opposite approach and skipping over SQL 2005 (from SQL 2000) as the effort is almost identical compared with moving to SQL 2005. I see great features in SQL 2008 that companies value:

    Compression (both table and database)

    Auditing

    Policy based management etc

and wouldn't hesitate to recommend an upgrade to SQL 2008...

  • Unfortunately, we live in a world in which perception is evething, take the 2005 and then the 2008. in the eyes of all hiring you will look at two certifications rather then one. in any event all you will need is an upgrade.

    😉
