Does Transaction Log backup affect Replication?

  • Throughout the day the Transaction Log is backed up and shipped off to the DR server. The backing up of the Log obviously clears down the log file.

I now also want to use replication to replicate certain tables to a reporting server. I'm new to replication so wasn't sure if the regular clearing down of the Transaction Log would cause a problem for the Replication?

  • Backing up the Log file won't cause replication a problem. Transactions which require replication will remain in the Log file until the Log Reader Agent has marked them as replicated. As far as the Log Reader Agent is concerned, a transaction is replicated once it has been written to the distribution database.

So, if anything, you may notice replication having an impact on the size of the published database's log file but this would only occur if the Log Reader Agent was having problems writing to the distribution database typically.

    Hope that helps,

    Mike

  • Exactly what I need to know. Thank you.
