I haven't started my upgrade yet, but can see something for you to look at.
Isn't version 10.00.1600 a SQL 2008 instance?

Are multiple versions of SQL installed on your target machine?
What type or upgrade are you planning on doing? Side by side, or in place?

I'll try to find the guide I started looking at.

Here's a link to a manual about upgrading.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=66D3E6F5-6902-4FDD-AF75-9975AEA5BEA7&displaylang=en

It's a large document, but covers a lot.
