Merry Christmas to all of y'all.

Peace on earth, goodwill to all peoples. Even those at whom Jeff would throw pork chops..

Perhaps a bit melancholy, but it needs to be said. To all those that have ever taken their precious time and, sometimes, personal expense to ask a question or write a solution here on SQLServerCentral or deliver a presentation in the field, thank you for the opportunity to learn and pass it forward. I stand in awe of your dedication to the worldwide SQL Community and am truly appreciative of the knowledge you share so easily and freely without regard to borders or boundaries of any kind.

If only we could get the rest of the world onboard with such thoughtfulness and goodwill.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all.

"RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for "Row-By-Agonizing-Row".

First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
Stop thinking about what you want to do to a row... think, instead, of what you want to do to a column."

Merry Christmas to all. And may your pork chops arrive peacefully on plates, not violently on your occiputs.

Merry Christmas to all. And may your pork chops arrive peacefully on plates, not violently on your occiputs.

In my Christmas tradition, it is a carp today, and a fowl (in my case duck) tomorrow.

I just want to renew my promise that whenever you are near this postal code, I will make my best to convince you that there is such thing as drinkable bourbon.

Other threadizens, we can always haggle over the bill, but I hope we will get together, soon.

Merry Christmas to all people of good will - among which I trust and hope to count you.

Steve, I have a QA request: please add a 'Do not count towards messages posted' check box for a reply.

I feel really guilty sending a message to a friend - Tom, in this case - as opposed to, say, answering a plight of a poor soul in India who needs help on a Sunday PST.

Thanks, and the most Merry Christmas, Steve.

Merry Christmas to all!

And may your New Years be filled with new learning opportunities, lasting relationships, new friends, good health and prosperous ventures.

My mantra: No loops! No CURSORs! No RBAR! Hoo-uh!

My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

Need to UNPIVOT? Why not CROSS APPLY VALUES instead?
Since random numbers are too important to be left to chance, let's generate some!
Learn to understand recursive CTEs by example.
Splitting strings based on patterns can be fast!
