Service Pack upgrade confusion

  • Hi

I want to upgrade our SQL Server 2005 installation(RTM version)to SP2. I have been reading on this on various sites(including Microsoft) which has me a bit confused.

MS released a hotfix after SP2 so should the hotfix be installed after installing SP2. Also in some sites i found that if SP2 is downloaded after March 05 2007 then the hotfix is not required.

Could someone give proper information on this... someone who has actually upgraded to SP2.

    ThankYou

  • Chirag,

if you had downloaded SP2 after March 05 2007 then everything is fine.....if you have the previous SP2 released b4 it you will face some issues with maintenace cleanup task...refer, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933508/

This is the latest one after march 05 the 2007, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=e2c358a1-ecc4-4c49-8f65-daa6b7800eec&displaylang=en

  • In my opinion, Microsoft is not very good at helping us keep track of all their new versions, releases, service packs and hotfixes - it's more or less a jungle out there.

Here's what I do and I've done this about 15 times over the past 4 months:

    First I install SP2, downloaded April 20. 2007 (KB921896, version 9.00.3042).

Then I install the Hotfix KB934459, also downloaded April 20. 2007. This brings the SQL Server instance up to version 9.0.3159. I guess you don't really have to do this, but I figure if you're upgrading anyway, you might as well get something close to the latest version while you're at it.

Actually no, it's not. That's version 9.00.3050. I have 9.0.3159 and there are newer versions after that one as well. Like I said, Microsoft is not doing a very good job of helping people keep track of these things.
