Easiest way to remember this: OUTPUT clause is valid for those statements that produce a "Deleted" and/or "Inserted" table.

I think this question could have been worded better. My answer was "incorrect" because I read the question in the context of a stored procedure, which can use OUTPUT to return a value.

I, too, thought of the OUTPUT in the context of a stored procedure.
I have SPs and use OUTPUT often.
