Hi,
I am trying to install SQL SERVER 2000 Standard Edition on one of the laptops. The laptop has windows xp professional sp2. It is installing only client components. It is not installing server. I remember installing SQL SERVER on my laptop which installed server also. I also has windows xp professional. I am not if it is the standard edition or Enterprise edition that I installed on my laptop. Will that make any difference? If so, can I install MSDE and use the client tools to access MSDE. If not possible, are there any free Management tools for MSDE? Please let me know.

installing SQL Server on a non-Server operating system automatically dummies itself down to MSDE; no need to download a dedicated executable. are you getting the dialog where you can install the server stuff and not just the client utilities?

I am not getting any dialog that can install the server stuff. When i start install, it is saying that "cannot install sql server 2000 standard edition server components. can only install client components."

Hi,
editions of 2000 that will install on the laptop with workstation OS are Personal (which is a developer's counterpart of Standard Edition) and Developer (which is a developer's conterpart of Enterprise Edition)

Actually Personal is SQL Server 2000 Standard with MSDE limitations and only requires a SQL Server 2000 CAL license.

I think the evaluation Enterprise Edition that comes with the SQL Server 2000 System Administration book will install on Windows XP Professional, but it only works for 120 days of course...

The only MSDE limitation shared in Personal edition is the workload governor. Personal edition does not have the 2gb database size limit, supports SQL Mail and full-text search, and has Analysis Services.
Sridhar; you can get around the restriction to install Standard edition on Windows XP, by running the installation program directly from a shortcut, and setting compatibility on the shortcut to a compatible OS. You cannot run the default setup or autorun, you have to look deeper into the CD directories to the real install program (I don't remember exactly where right now without a CD to check). Lookup in BOL for unattended installation for the clues to find it.

I am also getting the same error. I am unable to install SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition on WindowsXP sp2.

installing Enterprise Edition of SQL Server on a non-Server operating system will work, it just automatically dummies itself down to MSDE;
So it's true you can put in the CD, install and everything, but once installed, when you select @@version, you'll see all the above posts were true about which versions are possible.
