Does anyone recognise the data type for the following string?   2004-05-13 00:00:00.000

If there is no datatype for this string can anyone please explain to me how I can convert it, perhaps through text manipulation (I have already tried to convert the datatype for the column that holds data in this format, without luck).

As Jaideep mentioned, this is a datetime data-type.  You can use the CONVERT function to do manupulations on it.
