How to maintain transaction log within guest OS when backing up via Hyper V host

  Hi all,

  I am totally failing at this task!

  Previously I ran a backup task within the guest OS in MSSQL, taking a full backup daily and transaciton logs every 30 minutes. This was great and I could restore to any point in time and only lose 30 minutes of data in a disaster.

  Then I thought...I really want a bare metal backup solution as well in case the OS/guest falls over. So I started up Windows Server Backup on the Hyper V host and set it to backup the hyper V guest by selecting them in the what to backup section.

  I have tried both VSS settings in Server Backup (full or copy) and in both cases the transaction log is no longer accessible from MSSQL as the previous full backup has no name (its from the host backup)..so I can use my full from within MSSQL backup which runs earlier, and the point in time transaction log backups from that point till the full backup initialised by the HOST backup but none afterwards as they try to go off the HOST backup which is not available.

  Can anyone help...This must be a common novice mistake!
