What random trash is in your drawer?

  • Only because I just opened it and noticed what was in it, i thought I'd ask others. yes I have the normal stuff, pens, a USB drive, insurance magazines (I work for an insurance company), work based educational certificates. Then I find things like the following:

    - A pack of playing cards

    - A Toothbrush (still in it's packaging)

    - Toothpaste (opened)

    - Plastic fork

    - Manga book

    - A bag of excuses (literally)

    - Raffle tickets

    - Betting slips from 2 years ago

Does anyone else have stuff in their drawers that you look at and think "Why is that in there?"

  • Well, yes. And it's things like a box file, an assortment of stationery such as stapler, hole punch, two large boxes of staples, sellotape etc.

What's more bizarre is that this is stuff that was given to me as I joined this client earlier this year. All seemingly new (still boxed). Why? What are they expecting a DBA to do? Print stuff out and staple it to the wall? What year is this?

Other people might question the bottle of chilli sauce and salt shaker that I keep in my drawers...

    - Manga book

    That explains the avatar.

I know what I have which may seem odd to others but I use. Slippers (for when I need boots to get to work), blanket (it is cold in here), ball cap (needed if I go for a lunchtime walk the day I ride to work)...

When I first started here I wrote everything down so I still have three or four legal pads of notes that mean nothing to me, but I keep anyway.

Having those items in your drawers must make walking difficult.

  • Hopefully none of is have printed reports in our desk drawers containing personal information about customers. :ermm:

  • No drawers in this desk, but the other one still has random cables, old cell phone, USB drives, various business cards, spare mouse, credentials from events, ibuprofen, icy hot, and change

  • A locked box.

Inside that locked box is medication. Lots and lots of medication. My regularly prescribed daily meds, every OTC NSAID you can think of, allergy medicine, Cold medicine, icy hot, bengay, Capsazin Cream, cough drops, caffeine tablets, about 20 different vitamins and supplements, and, for those days where I need a hasty exit from the office - laxatives (just kidding on the last one) .

I also have about 10 different kinds of coffee and tea, a french press, a tea infuser, three or four mugs, a spare change of clothes, a blanket, a massage cushion and a heating pad and a two week supply of canned food. I also have a few paperbacks for when long processes are running. Thanks to my excellent preparedness, I don't have to leave the office for anything.

All you need now is toothpaste, batteries, condoms, and a cash register, and you can start operating a pharmacy on the side. 🙂

    Safety First!

  • I had to change desks recently (first time in 6 years), besides the usual office supplies found these in my desk drawer:

plastic spoon and knife (no fork here)

    SQL Server 2012 MSDN disk

    SQL Saturday 2011 session schedule

    Chinese take out menu

a packaged wet wipe from local restaraunt

an old screw that had fallen out of the ductwork when a maintenance guy was working in the ceiling

and a 7 year old 30 page ER diagram 😛

I'll never forget that SQL Saturday though, February in Cleveland (well they picked a spot way out in the middle of nowhere) and the parking lot was a sheet of ice so everyone had trouble trying to leave when the day was over.

  • I try to keep my desk relatively clean but at my last job I had to fill in in the mail room for a week(after massive downsizing) and not only was everything a completely disorganized mess but there was literal refuse everywhere. I ended up spending almost a day just cleaning and organizing before it was a usable environment

You don't need to use them at the office. You can just avoid a stop when leaving the office. 😉
