AlwaysOn with replication

  • My client has asked me if I could find out the answer to these questions. Firstly, let me briefly describe you of the architecture, and what they are planning to achieve. Currently, their on premise DC consists of the following

    2 * 2 node cluster

    2 node cluster (SQL 2008 R2 FCI) - Windows Server 2008 R2 - Let me denote it as A

2 node cluster (SQL 2012 FCI) - Windows 2012 - Let me denote it as B

Also, SQL instance on A is acting as a publisher with local distributor, and B is behaving as a subscriber.

Okay, so coming to the actual detail. Basically, they are shutting down the DC, and they want to move onto Amazon EC2...as of now they are in the prep-work stage. Kind of phase 1, but on EC2 things would be different. Here are the details below

2 node cluster without FCI...everything will be standalone

2 SQL 2008 R2 instances on each node (Mirroring would be established across all the databases)

2 SQL 2012 instances on each node (All the databases would be in AlwaysOn Ag...there will be 2 AG's basically..let us say x, and y)

Here, comes the interesting part...currently, as I mentioned above they have replication setup, and they want to have the same in EC2 as well, but we are not sure how to deal with it when the database is part of mirroring (publisher), and then also part of AlwaysOn AG as well (subscriber). Any information or help in this regard would be highly appreciated. I know for sure that distributor can't be part of an AlwaysOn primary or secondary, but I am not sure how it would work with database mirroring, and AlwaysOn combined.

    Thanks
